COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) was alerted to a vehicle being driven recklessly on southbound I-65 on Friday at 11:30 p.m.
The car was described as swerving on the roadway and brake-checking several other cars. Deputies located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
The suspect car accelerated to speeds of more than 110 mph. During the pursuit, the vehicle attempted to exit the interstate at the 64-mile marker, however, the driver lost control. A collision resulted in the vehicle going airborne and rolling over, entrapping one of the three occupants.
BCSO took all three occupants into custody. They were found to be juveniles, and all were believed to have been intoxicated. The subsequent investigation discovered that the car driven by the juveniles was reported stolen out of Indianapolis.
The three teenagers received medical treatment. One passenger was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital by ambulance.
The 16-year-old driver was remanded into the custody of the Bartholomew County Youth Services Center on the charges of: Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Stolen Property, Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Operating While Intoxicated, Operating While Intoxicated – Endangerment, and Illegal Consumption. The other two teens will have criminal charges forwarded.
This is a preliminary investigation. All persons are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
